The totally bonkers stage show turns classic set pieces from the movies into amazingly catchy musical numbers, with song titles like “All the Men in My Life Keep Getting Killed by Candarian Demons,” “Do the Necronomicon,” “We Will Never Die,” and “Blew That B Away.” The endlessly clever show features elaborate sets, creative puppet work, singing zombies, and gooey fake blood flying all over the place (which is why the producers have called the show an “interactive 4D experience”).

When a group of college students read from the ancient book of the dead, what was supposed to be a relaxing weekend at a cabin in the woods turns into a terrifying battle against ancient evil, demons, zombies, angry trees, reanimated animal corpses, and possessed hands, as heroic hardware store employee Ash (Campbell’s iconic character in the movie trilogy) battles to save the day with his wits and trusty chainsaw. First performed on stage in 2003 at the Tranzac club in Toronto, Ontario, the show. The outrageous show is an adaptation of the original movie with classic elements from sequels Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness thrown in for good measure. Now, it’s back by popular demand at a new location, the Windows Showroom at Bally’s.
Then, the outrageous, interactive, “4D” theatrical experience crept and crawled its way to Las Vegas, where it made audiences laugh and scream in equal measure. Just like the movie that inspired it, the show became a massive cult success that has played in cities all over the world, including a successful off-Broadway run in New York City. Creating the fx of the living cabin was a good challenge for my technical theater students and the play itself was as entertaining to the cast and crew as it was to our audience. The audience and administration loved it. Despite the movie’s continued success on home video and midnight movie screenings, no one ever imagined that the blood splattered horror flick would be turned into a musical… but that’s exactly what happened when Evil Dead: The Musical first premiered in Toronto in 2003.
